Resident Dies In Fire At Senior Living Complex
FRENCHTOWN TWP. (WWJ/AP) - Officials have identified the resident of a senior citizens apartment complex in southeast Michigan who was found dead following a fire on the seventh floor of the building.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Department says 75-year-old Bea M. Hankey was found Tuesday in a chair in her apartment of the Frenchtown Place complex, on N. Macomb Street in Frenchtown Township.
Officials say the fire, which broke out around 11:15 a.m., was confined to the chair and the surrounding area, and was quickly extinguished.
Residents were evacuated, but most remained inside in the building's lobby or multipurpose rooms until firefighters cleared the area around 1 p.m.
Property owners estimate damage from the fire at about $25,000.
While the cause of the fire is under investigation, the sheriff's department said foul play isn't suspected.
