Mom, Kids Found Stabbed To Death In Van Buren
VAN BUREN TWP. (WWJ) - Police in Van Buren Township are investigating multiple homicides Thursday morning after discovering the bodies of a mother and two young children who had been stabbed to death.
The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed to WWJ Newsradio 950 that three bodies were found inside a home on Anna Street, near I-275 and Ecorse Road.
"It is very, very disturbing that something like this happens in any community and especially in our semi-rural township of Van Buren," Township Supervisor Paul White told WWJ's Roberta Jasina.
Reports indicate that the bodies are connected to a wrong-way crash on an Indiana freeway that killed two people.
Police said the Michigan man was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-94 near Michigan City, Ind. around 1:30 a.m. Thursday when his car collided head-on with a second vehicle, causing both vehicles to erupt in flames.
Investigators were sent to the man's home around 8:30 a.m. to notify his family of his death and that's when they apparently made the gruesome discovery.
The victims are allegedly the Van Buren man's 34-year-old wife and two children, ages 4 and 7. Reports say they were stabbed to death.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the people involved in this. We all need to keep the folks in mind and realize that some family is hurting over the situation and on behalf of all the residents of Van Buren Township, our hearts go out to those families," said White.
Police talking to WWJ's Florence Walton said the husband had attempted suicide earlier this year, and investigators do believe he could have been responsible for his family's death.
"I can tell you he is definitely a person of interest," said Van Buren Township Police Captain Gregory Laurain. "We have no other suspects in mind at this point, nothing's drawing us to that. There were no signs of forced entry and there were no signs of robbery at the scene."
Laurain said they are looking into why the husband was in Indiana.
Police are not ruling out that the man intentionally caused the fatal crash. The driver of the other car was also killed.
"Unfortunately, everybody that's involved in this is deceased, so trying to put this puzzle together is difficult at best," Laurain said.
