Suspect Shot Following Bank Robbery
HUNTINGTON WOODS (WWJ) - A suspect has been wounded in a police shooting following a bank robbery in Huntington Woods.
An investigation is underway where the shooting took place Monday morning near a home on Oxford Street in Pleasant Ridge.
Huntington Wood Deputy Police Chief Nick Armold said the robbery happened late Sunday night at a Chase Bank branch at Salem and Woodward Ave.
"We received a 911 call from a citizen on a cell phone reporting a suspicious person who had walked in the bank and then shortly after walked out," Armold to WWJ Newsradio 950's Pat Sweeting.
Armold said the citizen noticed money falling from the suspect's bag and continued to follow him until authorities could get there.
When police arrived, a chase ensued, ending when the suspect crash and abandoned his vehicle along Woodward, just south of the I-696 freeway.
Armold said the suspect continued to flee on foot through a park and into a neighborhood. A witness said it was there that the man was fired upon as many as five times after he extended his arm in the officers' direction.
The man was taken to Beaumont Hospital were his condition was not immediately known.
Police said they recovered the stolen money.
