Report Ranks Healthiest Counties In Michigan
DETROIT (WWJ) - Where do you think your community stacks up when it comes to health?
Based on a new health report card from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Leelanau County -- near Traverse City -- and Ottawa County -- in west Michigan -- top the list of healthiest counties in the state, while Ontonagon County -- in the Upper Peninsula -- and Wayne County took the lowest rankings at 80 and 81. Oakland County came in at 16, Monroe County is ranked 38 and Macomb County is at number 41.
The 2012 County Health Rankings report ranks Michigan counties according to their summary measures of health outcomes and health factors. Counties also receive a rank for mortality, morbidity, health behaviors, clinical care, social and economic factors, and the physical environment. Those having high ranks are estimated to be the "healthiest."
Pat Remington of County Health Rankings said the findings can be used to effect change.
"Some communities have formed coalitions, not just of healthcare folks and hospitals, but of business leaders and voluntary folks, people from churches, who are trying to come together to do all that it takes to make a healthy community," said Remington.
