Report: Pistons Talking Move To Downtown Detroit For 2017/18 Season
AUBURN HILLS (WWJ) - As the Detroit Pistons open their new season Wednesday night, talks about a possible move to downtown Detroit are ongoing according to published reports.
Crains Detroit says a timetable is unclear and there's been no final agreement but the Pistons may be calling Detroit home again after a 40-year stretch north of the city.
On Tuesday, Oakland County officials say they rejected a $384 million offer in June to buy the Palace of Auburn Hills.
A news release on the rejected sale says the county turned down the offer "because it did not want to risk having taxpayers shoulder another Silverdome."
Executives for the Pistons and Olympia Entertainment have been talking for months about a possible move.
Tom Wilson, president and CEO of Olympia Entertainment, is keeping any details of talks to a minimum telling WWJ he's not aware of anything more than has been reported.
There is some thought that they'd like to get a deal done before the arena opens next year so construction needs of the Pistons are met and there wouldn't need to be any additional renovations.
The Pistons home opener is Friday.
