Report: Detroit Schools Increased Travel Spending

DETROIT (AP) - A published report says the financially struggling Detroit Public Schools increased spending on travel and consultants over the last year.

The Detroit Free Press on Friday published details of its analysis of public expenditure reports. The newspaper found that in some cases pay to individual consultants was twice as much as the salary for the employee who was replaced.

The review found that the district spent more than $1.6 million on American Express travel-related purchase expenses from March 3, 2010, to March 3, 2011 under its former emergency manager.

Under a $1.2 billion proposed budget released Thursday, expenses would be cut by about $230 million with 853 jobs axed and employees forced to take a 10-percent pay cut. District spokesman Steve Wasko says officials are focusing on the current budget.
