Report: Christine Beatty A Year Behind On Restitution To Detroit
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - The former chief of staff to ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has not paid on her court-ordered restitution to the city for nearly a year.
Christine Beatty's last $500 payment was made Jan. 16, 2014, according to a Detroit News report.
Beatty and the married Kilpatrick both served jail sentences for lying in court about an affair following a text-messaging sex scandal.
City attorney Butch Hollowell told the newspaper that the city has reached out to Beatty's lawyers. She still owes about $78,000 and now lives in Georgia.
Her attorney Jeffrey Morganroth says Beatty has "been in a tough situation."
"Things are very difficult for her. I know she's been in a tough situation and is doing what she can to rectify it," he said. "The association with the Kilpatrick administration, it just creates a cloud."
According to the report, the IRS filed tax liens against Beatty in August and October, accusing her of owing $26,472 in income taxes. She previously filed for bankruptcy in 2012, saying she was $390,000 in debt.
Kilpatrick is serving a 28-year sentence after his conviction on corruption charges. Attorneys seeking a new trial for Kilpatrick will argue Tuesday before the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals.
