DETROIT (CBS DETROIT) – The Detroit Pistons have not yet introduced Rasheed Wallace as a new assistant coach, but according to CBSSports.com, the deal is done.
Multiple reports from Detroit's summer league games in Orlando have said the former Piston is already on the Detroit bench wearing a team polo.
ESPN is now reporting that head coach Maurice Cheeks confirmed that the organization is working out the final details of a two-year deal with Wallace.
President of basketball operations Joe Dumars talked about at length a little more than a week ago about bringing Wallace back to Detroit. Though new head coach Maurice Cheeks originally deemed it a 'crazy idea' when he broached the subject with Dumars, both thought it might actually work well.
Particularly because of the youth Detroit has in its frontcourt with forwards Andre Drummond, Greg Monroe and second-round pick Tony Mitchell, the Pistons could benefit from someone played 16 seasons in the NBA and exhibited solid defense and rebounding. Of course, it does not hurt that he won a championship with Detroit in 2004.
Dumars categorized Wallace as a very intelligent player but added that he and Cheeks would need to have long talks with Wallace – the holder of the record for most technical fouls (304) in NBA history – before they put him in a position to have authority on the team and to represent the organization.
Even in the midst of those talks, though, Dumars said Wallace was "great" and that there was a "good possibility" Wallace would be joining the team as an assistant.
