Report: Cabrera Likely Won't Be Traded
DETROIT (CBS Detroit) -- Rumors have been swirling this offseason that the Detroit Tigers are willing to trade some of their best players in an effort to shed payroll.
Even stars Justin Verlander and Miguel Cabrera's names have come up in some trade discussions since the season ended. However, one report indicates that the Tigers' slugging first baseman will likely stay in a Detroit uniform.
Baseball insider Jon Heyman reported Saturday that the Tigers are unlikely to trade Cabrera and that most talks haven't been serious surrounding the 33-year-old Venezuelan.
"According to a source close to the situation, there have been no active talks regarding Cabrera. "There's never been anything close," the source said.
A rival GM said of Cabrera's contract, "Not too many contracts like that one will be given anymore.""
Cabrera recently spoke with a Venezuelan baseball writer and said he would be open to a trade if a good opportunity presents itself.
Rumors have swirled that every player on the Tigers roster is fair game on the trade market, but that the front office might be asking for the world as far as what it gets in return.
Cabrera came to Detroit in 2008 as a part of a blockbuster deal with the Florida Marlins that sennt top prospects Cameron Maybin and Andrew Miller to Florida.
The Tigers ranked fourth in the MLB in total payroll in 2016. Cabrera signed an eight-year, $248 million contract extension with the Tigers in 2014. He's due to make $28 million in 2017.
