Report: Advanced Manufacturing Thrives In Michigan
They could be called Michigan's new Big 3. The University Research Corridor, made up of Wayne State, the University of Michigan and Michigan State, have released a report that says two-thirds of Michigan's industrial jobs are in the better-paying and more secure advanced manufacturing sector.
The study found more than 381,000 people at 11,00 Michigan firms are working in high-tech, highly productive advanced manufacturing jobs - nearly two-thirds of the state's manufacturing base.
The report, by the Anderson Economic Group Makers, defines advanced manufacturing as those that make high-tech products; develop or apply processes for future manufacturing; or have productivity growth rates significantly above the U.S. average.
"The new auto industry, and many other inductries, are dealing in nanotechnology... in the kinds of things that are information technology-driven; that are nanotechnology-driven; that are in the modern era of high tech," said Wayne State University President Jay Noren.
Last year the URC invested more than $100 million in advanced manufacturing research and development, according to the report.
Wednesday's report was released as part of a URC three-campus bus tour.
