Report: 100 Detroit Cops To Be Laid Off
DETROIT (WWJ) - Pink slips are expected to be handed to more than 100 Detroit police officers Tuesday afternoon. But the officers might not be out of a job.
According to reports a federal grant program is ending, but the cash-strapped city is expected to re-apply for the money to keep the cops on the streets.
The officers in question were expected to meet with Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee on Wednesday.
This news come just one day following an announcement that Detroit police will be ending around-the-clock desk service at precincts. Godbee is expected to address that issue later this week.
The layoffs are part of the city's plan to cut 1,000 jobs by April to help reduce a deficit of about $200 million in Detroit's general fund. Detroit Mayor Dave Bing has said the city could run out of cash by April.
