Regulators Work To Cleanse Highly Contaminated Site In Central Michigan
ST. LOUIS, Mich. (AP) - Michigan's top environmental regulator has visited a highly contaminated industrial site in Gratiot County where state and federal officials are overseeing a cleanup.
Department of Environmental Quality Director Dan Wyant toured the Superfund site in St. Louis on Monday.
Michigan Chemical and Velsicol Chemical left behind DDT, polybrominated biphenyls and other poisons when they moved out. Michigan and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are collaborating to clean a nearby neighborhood.
The Morning Sun of Mount Pleasant reports that Wyant said the project is important and a "significant investment" for the state.
Work this year reduced environmental and human health risks for more than 45 adjoining properties. An additional 53 are targeted for next year.
The project includes bringing a new supply of drinking water to St. Louis.
