Regional Jobless Rates In Mich. Dropped In August

The state says seasonally unadjusted unemployment rates dropped in all 17 major labor markets across Michigan in August.

The Michigan Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth report released Thursday indicates regional rates ranged from a low of 8.8 percent in the Ann Arbor region to 14.4 percent in the Detroit area.

Mackinac County had the state's lowest jobless rate among counties at 5.6 percent. Baraga County had the highest rate at 22 percent.

A monthly survey of employers indicated that seasonally unadjusted payroll jobs in Michigan dropped by 11,000 in August to about 3.8 million.

 The state's major labor market areas, their seasonally unadjusted jobless rates for August and changes since July:

   - Ann Arbor, 8.8 percent, compared with 10 percent.
   - Battle Creek, 11.3 percent, compared with 13 percent.
   - Bay City, 11.5 percent, compared with 12.7 percent.
   - Detroit-Warren-Livonia, 14.4 percent, compared with 15.2 percent.
   - Flint, 13.9 percent, compared with 15.4 percent.
   - Grand Rapids-Wyoming, 10.7 percent, compared with 11.9 percent.
   - Holland-Grand Haven, 11.3 percent, compared with 12.6 percent.
   - Jackson, 12.8 percent, compared with 14.3 percent.
   - Kalamazoo-Portage, 10.9 percent, compared with 12.2 percent.
   - Lansing-East Lansing, 10.1 percent, compared with 11.3 percent.
   - Monroe, 12.9 percent, compared with 14.4 percent.
   - Muskegon-Norton Shores, 13.5 percent, compared with 14.9 percent.
   - Niles-Benton Harbor, 12.4 percent, compared with 14 percent.
   - Saginaw-Saginaw Township North, 11.8 percent, compared with 13.1 percent.
   - Upper Peninsula, 11.3 percent, compared with 12.5 percent.
   - Northeast Lower Michigan, 13.5 percent, compared with 15 percent.
   - Northwest Lower Michigan, 12.2 percent, compared with 13.2 percent.
