Red Wings Unveil Silver-Striped Centennial Classic Jersey [PHOTOS]
With every outdoor game in the NHL comes the promise of some new-look jerseys.
It's a routine the Red Wings are familiar with, having played in three outdoor contests since 2009. On each occasion, the team wore a commemorative sweater.
This season, the Wings will skate outside on New Year's Day in Toronto - and once again, they'll do so in unprecedented style.
On Monday, the team unveiled its jersey for the much-anticipated Centennial Classic.
Per the team's website, the jersey pays tribute to the Red Wings' rich history and the NHL's 100th anniversary:
"The color silver is used throughout the uniform as a nod to the League's milestone season, most notably in a special version of the Winged Wheel front crest that incorporates silver tones into the normally white areas. Additionally, silver is found in the top stripe on both sleeves of the jersey, along with the trim in the uniform numbers."
The Red Wings' first five championships are recognized on the right sleeve (1936, 1937, 1943, 1950, 1952) and their next six are recognized on the left sleeve (1954, 1955, 1997, 1998, 2002, 2008).
Meanwhile, the red stripes on both sleeves are evocative of the jerseys worn by the original Detroit Cougars. According to the team's website, "The pants will also feature a version of the letter "D," similar to the design worn originally by the Cougars during the team's 1926-27 season."
These limited-edition jerseys will go on sale on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at Hockeytown Authentics in Troy. They will also be available for purchase at Joe Louis Arena when the Red Wings host the Canadiens on Saturday, Nov. 26. Each jersey costs $215, with a player's name and number on the back.
