CBS DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings have placed 31-year-old right wing Jordin Tootoo on unconditional waivers, according to multiple reports. Tootoo played in 42 games for the Red Wings in the 2012-2013 season but got into just 11 games in the 2013-2014 season.
Tootoo spent much of last year in the American Hockey League, where he had not been since the 2005-2006 season. He played 51 games for the Grand Rapids Griffins. Tootoo signed a three-year, $5.7 million deal with the Red Wings in 2012, but general manager Ken Holland talked after this season about potentially buying out the one remaining year on Tootoo's contract because Tootoo wants to get back to the NHL and the Red Wings do not have room for him on their roster.
Before coming to Detroit, Tootoo played eight seasons for the Nashville Predators. He played in 50 or more games in seven of those eight seasons. Tootoo had enjoyed a four-year stretch of double-digit assist totals when he arrived in Detroit in 2012.
