Red Wings Mobile App Adds New Virtual Features

By Edward Cardenas

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) - The Detroit Red Wings have added new features to their mobile app that will allow fans to virtually experience the team in new ways at home and at the Joe Louis Arena.

The new feature, named 'Wingscape,' allows users of the Red Wings Official Mobile App to experience augmented reality technology - which includes behind-the-scenes videos, animations and greetings from players - by pointing their smart phone at images at Joe Louis Arena, online or at home.

"We have worked to create a Red Wings App that delivers the content and experiences our fans want via their mobile devices," said Laura Murray, Director of Digital Marketing and Analytics for Olympia Entertainment and the Detroit Red Wings, in a release. "Red Wings fans want to connect with the players in a different way, and by introducing augmented reality, we hope to give them that experience."

The new feature, which is powered by HP Aurasma, is similar to QR codes which allows smart phone users to unlock exclusive content. Wingscape is available for the iOS (iPhone and iPad) and Android versions of the free Red Wings Official Mobile App. A demonstration of the app is available on the Red Wings website.

With the new feature, fans can point their smart phones at the Wingscape at multiple locations within Joe Louis Arena when attending a Red Wings game and online at DetroitRedWings.com.

The feature can also be utilized by scanning Winged Wheel logos, the cover of a Red Wings Today game program, the front of a Red Wings season ticket holder game ticket and the cover of the Red Wings 2015 Wall Calendar.

The team also updated the Red Wings Mobile App with features including team breaking news, live streaming video, social sharing, player bios, and statistics.
