Rally In Lansing To Address Arrests Under Medical Marijuana Law
DETROIT (WWJ) - Hundreds of patients and caregivers will rally on the Capitol steps at noon Wednesday in Lansing against the ongoing arrests of patients under Michigan's Medical Marijuana law.
Attorney Michael Komorn, who represents several people arrested under the law, says the rally is to protest what he calls the unfair treatment of patients and caregivers.
"They've created a lot of waste of tax-payer dollars trying to find people in violation of the medical marijuana act, where just the opposite was to take place, it was supposed to be prophylactic and protect people from prosecution," states Komorn.
Komorn says it can take up to six months for patients to get the cards that allow them to use marijuana.
"Why doesn't the government try to get the cards out on time, why don't you try to let it get implemented, in a way that patients can be respected by law-enforcement ..." says Komorn.
"We're finding out that law enforcement isn't recognizing the law as intended, they are still arresting patients and arresting caregivers when they are protected by state law," adds Komorn.
Komorn says they'd like to meet with politicians and law enforcement to discuss just what is acceptable under the law. The rally runs from noon to 3 p.m.
