Rally In Detroit To Stop Deportation Of Undocumented Resident
DETROIT (WWJ) - A rally outside the Immigration office in Detroit on Friday calling for an end to the deportation proceedings against local construction business owner Gustavo Vargas-Mendez, who's been in Michigan for 24 years.
Vargas-Mendez' wife, Rogelia spoke to WWJ's Pat Sweeting through an interpreter:
"What we are asking the government right now is to stop his deportation, but it's public support right now that is keeping him here," said Rogelia.
Gustavo Vargas-Mendez, supporters say, is the kind of man who should be allowed to stay in the U.S.; someone who is a contributing member of society.
Michigan Senator Coleman Young, II joined the rally of about two dozen people.
"This is very sad, what they are doing to this family. Primarily, it's more of a call for federal comprehensive immigration reform ... but it's time for us to stop separating mothers from their children, fathers from their families," said Young.
Vargas-Mendez was arrested three weeks ago during a traffic stop in Pontiac when it was discovered he was an undocumented resident.
