Rally Held In Detroit Calling For 'Justice For Trayvon Martin'
DETROIT (WWJ) - Several hundred people rallied for Trayvon Martin in downtown Detroit Saturday, one week after George Zimmerman was acquitted of his murder in Florida.
Rallies were held in cities nationwide as many, like the Reverend John Hearn, called for federal civil rights charges against Zimmerman.
"We will not let the blood of this young man go unnoticed," said Hearn. "We're putting America on notice. We're putting our Justice Department on notice. We want our ... get this boy's blood avenged."
Mary Gains of Detroit told WWJ's Beth Fisher that Zimmerman's acquittal was a travesty.
"I don't like to go into it like that but I think that if it had been anyone else - any other race - it would have been a different story. But now since it's one of our kids - not just our kids but America's kid, who was unarmed ... I think that we should have a different verdict the next time."
Maureen Taylor who works for Michigan Welfare Rights said women need to be a part of the fight for justice as do all races.
" ...it's all right for you to be John Wayne and we are telling you it ain't," she yelled to the crowd.
Some in the crowd wore hoodies in memory of the 17-year-old Martin. Zimmerman claimed he shot Martin in self-defense in Sanford, Florida.
