Pudge: Miguel Cabrera A 'Tremendous Athlete,' 'Must Be' MVP

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) - Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera has a good chance of winning the Most Valuable Player Award this season -- and Tiger star Ivan "Pudge" Rodríguez  thinks he deserves it.

"He's unbelievable. He's a tremendous athlete, tremendous player. And for me, no question about it, he'll have to be the MVP this year, for sure," said Rodríguez. "You know, when ... you're a triple-crown winner, you have to be -- you must be -- an MVP.

"It's going to mean a lot to him. He's been a sports fan for a long, long time -- he and his family, and I think it's time for him. You know, I think it's the year for him to have a World Series trophy in his hands," he said.

Rodríguez was traded to the New York Yankees in July, 2008, for relief pitcher Kyle Farnsworth. He then played for several other teams before retiring from baseball in April of this year.

Rodríguez came back to Detroit to throw out the first pitch for Thursday's ALCS game between the Tigers and Yankees. If the Tigers win, they'll move on to the World Series for the first time in six years.

You can hear Tigers games on 97.1 The Ticket.
