Protesters Say Romney Ignores The Working Man
TROY (WWJ) - About 200 people gathered in front of the Troy Marriott Wednesday afternoon while Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney attended a private fundraiser inside.
Members of the group say Romney wanted to let Detroit go bankrupt.
The protesters -- many part of a coalition of unions including the Detroit Federation of Teachers and electrical workers -- are not just upset about Romney's stance on the automotive bailout, they're also opposed to his tax policies that they say benefit the elite.
Protester Michael Fields said Romney doesn't care about the working man.
"You guys sit up in here with all these benefits and all this money ... you haven't done anything ... You probably don't' even have calluses on your hands from doing a decent days work," Fields said.
Protester Dwight Jarrett said he's not in the union -- but part of a much large group
"We represent the 99 percent, and we're gonna make sure that Mitt Romney hears the 99 percent," Jarrett told WWJ Newsradio 950's Sandra McNeil. "Because we jobs, we need him to take care of the homes, we need everything, you know what I'm saying?
"For this man to sit here and say that he's only going to hear the one percent ... we need him to hear everybody. That's what we're out here for," he said.
Romney is wrapping up a multi-state Midwest bus tour in Michigan.
