Rally For U.S. Support In Iraq Against ISIS
STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) - More than a thousand protesters rallied in Sterling Heights with the message to the group ISIS: Stop killing Christians in Iraq.
Lawrence Goriel was among the protesters marching on Ryan Road between 14 and 18 mile roads.
"This march shows that people can come together in the area, especially in the Detroit area, can come together as one people with a lot of division that we've had between our Syrian brothers and sisters and our Chaldean brothers and sisters. We've all come here together for one voice, one purpose, and it means a lot to me that these people come out here and show their support and show that they care about people.
"Isis is in Iraq right now ...they are targeting Iraqi Christians and they are beheading them, raping the women, robbing people and sending them away to the mountains to die. We are here to tell the people that this is not acceptable and something needs to be done about this," said Goriel.
Goriel said they are asking America to send more aid to Iraq.
In explaining his authorization of U.S. airstrikes in Iraq this week, President Obama emphasized the need to prevent a humanitarian disaster in Northern Iraq, where Sunni militants with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) had begun terrorizing religious minorities.
One of those minority groups, the Yazidi, found themselves cornered by ISIS fighters on a mountain near their ancestral homeland of Sinjar. Thousands of Yazidi men, women, and children were trapped, rapidly running out of food and water but unable to descend from the mountain for fear of the militants below.
