Protesters Claim DTE Not Paying Fair Share
DETROIT (WWJ) - Protesters took to the streets Thursday morning ahead of DTE Energy's annual shareholders meeting.
And while it was not nearly as large as last week's demonstration targeting GE, the message was the same: Pay your fair share of taxes.
"They have plenty of money, alright, but yet people are still being shut off," said one of the protest leader Rev. Charles Williams.
DTE officials say the claims are a lie because the company paid $1.5 billion in taxes over the last three years.
But, according to Williams, DTE received at least that much in tax breaks. "I mean, it's all subterfuge right? You say oh I paid, and then they have me back X amount of money," Williams said.
The group "Good Jobs Now" joined with other 99 percent protest groups for the demonstration.
Some at Thursday's event were there to express opposition to what they say is a plan by DTE to build a new nuclear power plant in our state.
