Prosecutors: Woman Tried To Burn Great Grandparents Alive

INKSTER (WWJ) - A preliminary examination date of January 4 has been set for an Inkster woman accused of stealing her great grandparents' credit cards and then attempting to murder them.

Prosecutors say 24-year-old Paris Smith fled to Canada in March after she allegedly set her family members' house on fire while they were trapped inside. The elderly couple, who were not seriously injured, were rescued by police.

Smith was caught on security cameras while spending her family members' money. She was arrested by U.S. Marshals at the Detroit Windsor Tunnel earlier this week.

Nancy Gardner was in court Thursday for her great granddaughter's arraignment.

"It made me really sad because we really loved each other, I thought," Gardner said. "I didn't think she was on any drugs or anything and she was really nice to us."

Bond for Smith was set at $500,000 cash. She remains in the Wayne County Jail.
