3 teens charged in connection with murder of Oakland County Deputy Bradley Reckling
(CBS DETROIT) - Three teens have been charged in connection with the murder of Oakland County Sheriff's Deputy Bradley Reckling, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said Wednesday.
Reckling was shot and killed on June 22 while following a vehicle stolen from the Red Oaks Waterpark in Madison Heights. A preliminary investigation shows Reckling located the stolen vehicle in Detroit and was behind it when the driver suddenly stopped and individuals exited the vehicle and opened fire.
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said the shooting was an "ambush." Recking was driving an unmarked vehicle that did not have a dash cam.
Raymone Raylee Debose, 18, of Clinton Township, is charged with murder of a peace officer, receiving and concealing stolen property, four counts of carrying a concealed weapon, three counts of felony firearm, carjacking and conducting a criminal enterprise.
Prosecutors allege that Debose fired a handgun from the stolen vehicle, fatally striking Reckling.
Marquis Lamar Goins, 18, of Detroit, is charged with accessory after the fact of a felony, receiving and concealing stolen property, four counts of carrying a concealed weapon, three counts of felony firearm, carjacking and conducting a criminal enterprise.
Karim Blake Moore, 18, of Clinton Township, was charged with accessory after the fact of a felony, receiving and concealing stolen property, four counts of carrying a concealed weapon, two counts of felony firearm and conducting a criminal enterprise.
According to Worthy, Reckling began investigating an auto theft ring in November 2023 that the three suspects were associated with. The theft ring spanned three counties and concluded the night Reckling was killed.
The theft ring resulted in at least four carjackings, four more vehicle thefts and eight counts of weapons charges being carried in the vehicles.
Debose and Goins were 17 years old when a carjacking occurred.
"When we started working on this case, we had no idea that it would lead where it did. Deputy Recking, who thought he was simply recovering a stolen car, was really pulled into what turned out to be a violent and far-reaching, car theft and carjacking criminal enterprise," said Worthy.
Reckling, 30, was a nine-year veteran of the department and a graduate of Romeo High School. He left behind a wife and three kids, ages five, four and one, with a fourth child on the way.
"Holding the individuals accountable in the senseless murder of Deputy Brad Reckling is one of our highest priorities," Bouchard said. "We appreciate all the work that the Detroit Police Department and the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has done to date and look forward to the perpetrators receiving the highest punishment possible. While that will never fill the void of husband, father, son, brother and friend to many, it will at least provide a sliver of justice."
The investigation remains ongoing, and more people could be charged in connection with the auto theft ring.
The teens were arraigned Wednesday in the 36th District Court. Debose was remanded to jail, while Goins received a $1 million cash bond.
Moore originally received a $250,000 cash bond, but the Oakland County Sheriff's Office says that number was reduced to $100,000 - 10% Friday after a bond reduction hearing. The sheriff's office that means Moore can be released after posting $10,000.
"I am shocked and appalled at Judge [William] McConico's ruling that essentially releases a criminal defendant charged in connection with the ambush murder of a dedicated public servant who was heroically killed in the line of duty, for a mere $10,000," Bouchard said in response to Friday's bond reduction.
A probable cause conference is scheduled for Nov. 8, with a preliminary examination to follow on Nov. 14.
