Prosecutor: No Charges Against Officers In Connection With Alleged Beating Of Carjacking Suspect
DETROIT (CBS DETROIT) - No charges will be filed against officers in the alleged beating of a carjacking suspect Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced Monday.
A video surfaced which showed 51-year-old Andrew Jackson of Detroit being punched and kicked by police during his arrest in January.
"Mr. Jackson was not handcuffed when the video captured him striking Mr. Jackson, it was clear that he was a felon attempting to flee and when apprehended was armed with a weapon while he actively resisted the attempts to arrest and refused to surrender his right hand for cuffing," said Worthy.
"The job of a Peace Officer can be dangerous but we can not tolerate those who abuse their authority - violate their oath - and prey on citizens rather than protect them."
Jackson was arrested by officers assigned to a regional auto-theft unit on Jan. 12 near Plainview and Pickford streets, south of 7 Mile Road, in Detroit. Video recorded by a local resident inside her home shows Jackson being kicked and beaten by cops from Grosse Pointe Park and Highland Park while they taunt him, shouting expletives.

Jackson — an ex-convict who was released from prison in 2013 — has filed a lawsuit in connection with the arrest. He's been ordered to stand trial June 8 on carjacking, robbery and other charges. He's accused of robbing a 55-year-old woman who was cleaning snow off of her car in the 18200 block of Evergreen, and threatening to shoot her grandchildren.
Worthy also announced that there would be charges filed against former Inkster Police Officer William Melendez.
