Propane, Not Natural Gas, Likely The Cause Of Redford Twp. House Explosion
REDFORD TOWNSHIP (WWJ/AP) - The house explosion that seriously injured one man Sunday night may have been caused by the use of propane gas according to DTE.
The blast happened Sunday evening in Wayne County's Redford Township, leaving behind piles of smoldering debris where the house used to stand.
Township fire department Battalion Chief Steven Norris says firefighters found the injured man in the debris. Norris says the man was "responding and awake" when he was taken to a hospital.
Neighbors said the residents had just moved in and the explosion happened when they tried to light the pilot lights for the furnace for the first time.
Norris says propane tanks were found at the home. The cause of the explosion is under investigation
DTE Energy telling WWJ that the home wasn't hooked up to its natural gas system. The person who owns the home hasn't been a natural gas customer since 2004 according to DTE.
