Project Lighthouse Aims To Keep Detroit Residents Safe
DETROIT (WWJ) - Downtown Detroit's neighborhood watch and security program continues to gain support as over 3o businesses have joined the effort to keep downtown residents safe.
Launched in August 2011, Project Lighthouse offers security personnel 24 hours, seven days a week at nearly two dozen locations throughout Detroit's central business district. The program provides assistance in non-emergency situations, such as residents who are locked out of their car or for those trying to find a restroom in a secure area.
According to Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee, those who need help should keep an eye out for the lighthouse insignia. "These are safe havens for are visitors and residents downtown," he said.
Several Lighthouse locations, including Motor City Casino, MGM Casino, DTE and Ilitch Properties have joined together to combine their security personnel and resources that are already in place to aid those who need help.
"We all have mobile patrols, so why not coordinate those monitoring the neighborhood in making sure they're safe and secure?" said Ilitch Holdings vice president of security Rick Fenton.
According to Godbee, with residential areas around the city are increasing, Lighthouse improves protection and makes downtown Detroit a more attractive place to live and visit.
"This is an enhancement that solidifies it as a strong community," he said.
