Program Lets Kids Under Age 10 Fire Rifles, Shotguns, Muzzleloaders
LANSING (WWJ/AP) - Children in Michigan who are under the age of 10 can get learn how to shoot rifles, shotguns, muzzleloaders and even crossbows during two free events next week in Oakland County.
It's all part of the Department of Natural Resources' Demonstration Days at state-operated shooting ranges in Ortonville and Pontiac Lake. Similar events are also being held in Rose Lake and Sharonville.
Young hunters can try a variety of firearms, as well as archery equipment, with help from range officers and hunter education instructors. They can also use the DNR's hunting simulator and get tips from conservation officers, who will explain what to expect in the field. Ammunition will be provided
Participants will get a free hat and a backpack full of resources for new hunters.
The event takes place from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 29 at the Pontiac Lake Shooting Range and on Wednesday, July 30 at the Ortonville Shooting Range.
DNR officials say the events are a great way for families to get familiar with the state's Mentored Youth Hunting program, which is designed to introduce children under age 10 to hunting and fishing.
For just $7.50, youth hunters under the age of 10 can obtain a "package" license to hunt turkey, deer and small game, trap furbearers and fish for all species. Hunting must take place under the supervision of a mentor, at least 21 years of age, who has previous hunting experience and a current hunting license. The youth hunter must be within arm's length of the mentor at all times.
The Mentored Youth Hunting program was established in 2012.
