Prison For Man Who Dropped Salt Defense To Murder

MOUNT CLEMENS (AP) - A man who originally pursued an insanity defense to his mother's stabbing death based on a salt deficiency has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Authorities say 39-year-old Charles Foresi stabbed 62-year-old Mattie Foresi 43 times last August at their Roseville home because she refused to give him money for drugs.

Defense lawyer Timothy Kohler said in May that Foresi experienced brain dysfunction because he suffered from hyponatremia, or a lack of salt in bodily fluids outside the cells.

But Foresi later withdrew the defense and instead pleaded guilty to first-degree murder.

Macomb County Circuit Judge Edward Servitto sentenced Foresi on Wednesday in Mount Clemens. First-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life without parole under Michigan law.
