President's State Of The Union Address Tonight

WASHINGTON (WWJ/AP) - President Barack Obama is getting ready to deliver an election-year State of the Union address heavy on economic themes when he addresses a joint session of Congress and millions of television viewers.

The president's annual speech at 9 p.m. EST Tuesday comes in the midst of an already heated re-election campaign as Republicans Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney fight for his job. Polls show Americans preoccupied with the economy and that's where Mr. Obama will focus when he takes the podium.

Mr. Obama will make an argument for economic fairness for the middle class and argue that he's the one to deliver it. He'll talk about manufacturing, education, clean energy and American values.

You can hear the president's address live on Talkradio 1270 and here at CBSDetroit.com starting at 9 p.m.

Metro Detroiters, meanwhile, will be listening in -- especially those trying to run local businesses. WWJ City Beat Reporter Vickie Thomas spoke to the owner of the Tip Toe Shoe Repair shop in downtown Detroit. He told Thomas he wants to hear what the president will do to create jobs.

"I'd like to hear the president say he find a way to bring back the jobs from China because a lot of people out there not working and there's no jobs, and the jobs are overseas," the man -- who didn't want to be identified -- told Thomas.

Customer Jeanine Bell -- in town from St. Louis for the hockey game -- wants to hear a positive message from the president.

"Good news for the Americans," Bell said. "I can't think of anything specific. I think he's doing a good job."
