PowerCapes.com Helps Heart Foundation Deliver Superhero Capes
A common purpose of helping children has united a Michigan-based company with a Nebraska-based foundation.
The Heart Heroes Foundation was established by three Nebraska moms, whose children were born with congenital heart defects, the No. 1 leading birth defect. Its mission is to donate superhero capes to children who are battling this illness.
PowerCapes.com is the Livonia-based supplier of superhero capes which can be purchased and customized online, including the official Heart Hero Badge, through gift card donations to the Heart Heroes Foundation at www.heartherocapes.com. All donations through this site are allocated 100 percent to the purchase of providing Heart Heroes capes to children with a congenital heart defect.
"The capes help comfort children who receive 'super hero strength' to overcome their fear of going to the doctor and facing extensive medical procedures," said Kitty Burton, one of the founding moms whose 3-year-old Sam who will soon undergo his third major heart operation.
According to Burton, the Foundation has shipped 200 capes to children worldwide during the past year through donations of $25 for each cape. There's still a waiting list of children who need them.
On Feb. 19, the foundation will hold its first family-fun "Capes4Courage" Charity Bowling event at Mockingbird Lanes in Omaha, Neb. to help raise money to fill these orders and deliver more superhero capes. Justin Draplin and Holly Bartman, owners of PowerCapes.com, plan to travel to Omaha to attend and help promote the "Capes4Courage" event.
Statistics about children born with congenital heart defects are staggering. It has been reported that in the United States twice as many children die from CHD each year than from all forms of childhood cancers combined.
"Heart Heroes' mission complements the principles our business was founded on, which include giving back to the community and supporting children's causes while making a fun, high quality and safe product," said Bartman, a former special education teacher. "We hope that we can help Heart Heroes receive more support nationwide."
