Power Line Falls On Car Trapping Motorist Inside
BRIGHTON (WWJ) - Authorities say a motorist if fine after being trapped in his car for more than a half hour with a fallen power line draped over the roof.
The incident happened Thursday morning as the man was stopped in his car on Hyne Road just west of old US-23 in Brighton.
A thunderstorm moving through the area caused a large tree branch to fall and on its way down, it took out a power line. Both the tree branch and the power line landed right on the man's vehicle.
Deputy Fire Chief Michael Evans says the motorist did the right thing and stayed inside his car.
"When we arrived our personnel talked to him and made sure that he was OK," Evans told WWJ's Laura Bonnell. "The power line was not catching the car on fire, and so there was no immediate hazard for the individual. So we just kept talking to him, kept him calm and waited for DTE to arrive."
The man was trapped for more than 30 minutes as DTE Energy officials worked to get power to the area turned off. Once the all-clear was given, the man was finally able to exit his vehicle.
"We had EMS standing by, but he was not injured," said Evans.
Hyne Road remains closed while crews deal with the fallen power line and tree branch.
