Postal Carriers Mourn Coworker Who Fell Through Porch
DUNDEE (WWJ) - Crisis counselors are on hand for postal workers in Dundee, Wednesday, a day after a popular mail carrier died on the job.
WWJ Newsradio 950 talked with Post Office spokesman Ed Moore who 46-year-old Nancy Shafer died after falling through a porch.
"Nancy was doing her regular route, this was the route that she'd been on for awhile. She's been with the postal service for 18 years... my understanding is that the porch just gave away," Moore said.
"She fell approximately eight to ten feet below, below and the concrete slab fell on top of her," he said.
Moore said Shafer was on the phone with her office when it happened and was able to ask for help. But, when rescue crews arrived, it was too late to save her. The homeowners were not home at the time.
Shafer was well-liked and her colleagues are still trying to come to grips with her death.
Moore said Shafer's co-workers are coping the best that they can.
"Dundee just recently... they went through a big flood, and our employees there made it to work , came through, maintained, did deliveries and so forth. So, things happen, it's just that this was truly a freak accident that, unfortunately, took the life of someone who was very much loved," Moore said.
An investigation of the accident is ongoing.
