Post Offices Will Close Earlier Tax Day; E-Returns Costing Millions
DETROIT (WWJ) - The vast majority of Americans now email their tax returns. Spokesman Ed Moore says the lack of lines at the post office on this day is an example of why the U.S. Post Office is in trouble.
Moore said tax day used to bring in a big profit.
"It represented in excess of over $100 million just for that one day alone for us," said Moore. "Because usually, a lot of times, it took more than one stamp."
The latest you can mail your returns is 10 p.m. Tuesday night at the Redford and downtown Detroit Post Office branch on Fort Street.
He stressed that anyone placing their mail into a blue box needs to make sure it's by the posted cut off time, or your return will be late.
