Porcello Not Voted Into All-Star Game

CBS DETROIT - Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Rick Porcello will not be joining teammates Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez and Max Scherzer in the 2014 All-Star Game. The vote concluded Thursday afternoon, and Chris Sale of the Chicago White Sox won the last spot on the American League team.
Porcello threw back-to-back complete-game shutouts June 26 and July 1, a remarkable achievement that vaulted him into contention for midseason honors. He has more wins (11) than the other four pitchers who contended for the final American League slot, but his ERA of 3.53 is the highest of the bunch.
Sale has an ERA of 2.08, the best in the American League. Sale's WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) of 0.84 is the best of both leagues. Sale also has an 8-1 record and has thrown two complete games.
Garrett Richards of the Los Angeles Angels, Corey Kluber of the Cleveland Indians and Dallas Keuchel of the Houston Astros were also vying for the final spot.
The Tigers encouraged fans to use the hashtag #PickRick to vote for Porcello's inclusion in the All-Star Game. Detroit players also made videos in support of their teammate's candidacy, and "Vote Porcello" signs and "Porcello's Got My Vote" T-shirts gained popularity as well.
