Popular Discount Retail Chain Closing
At the height of the holiday shopping season, a popular discount retailer is announcing it will close all of its stores, eliminating hundreds of jobs.
Many shoppers say AJ Wright is a great place to find clothing, jewelry and shoes at great prices -- but apparently the stores haven't been profitable enough.
The company that owns AJ Wright says it will close all of its 162 locations across the country, including several in Michigan.
Company officials say 91 of the closed stores will reopen under a different name. But, local AJ Wright stores slated to close for good include those Oak Park, Redford and Southgate.
Reporting from Oak Park on Friday, WWJ's Stephanie Davis got mixed reaction to the news.
One woman said travels from Canada to shop was disappointed.
"I've got a nephew in Virgina and, you know, he's growing every time. And he like the trendy clothes, he's fifteen. They're not taking non-brand name stuff. I can come here, pick up a couple of things, send them down ... it's a great store. I'm shocked!" she said.
"It's not a big deal to me," said another woman, adding that there's always somewhere else to shop.
