Poor Situational Hitting Leads To 1-0 Loss

The bad number for Detroit on Wednesday night was zero.

That's zero as in no runs scored, while host Kansas City scored one -- on an 80-foot, pop-fly single over the mound with a man on third in the fourth inning.

And that's zero as in the number of times Detroit got a hit with a runner in scoring position in the eight opportunities they had.

And zero as in the number of hits Detroit got from its sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth hitters combined.

"We had a couple chances," manager Jim Leyland said. "We just didn't get him in."

Detroit got Austin Jackson to third with one out after he led off the game with a double down the left field line. Bruce Chen struck out Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder to end the threat.
