Poor Defense Proves Costly In Series-Opening Loss At Chicago

Lack of offense continues to be a problem for a team that figured it would be able to club its shortcomings out of mind.

Detroit lost 6-1 at Chicago on Monday night to drop three games behind the first-place White Sox with three games yet to go in the series.

The Tigers have dropped the first four games of a 10-game trip that even they admit is critical to their postseason chances. They have lost six of seven since sweeping the White Sox at Comerica Park more than a week ago. Overall, the Tigers have lost 15 of their last 20 road games, and they are 3-for-21 with runners in scoring position on the road trip.

"I don't know if you'd say frustrated," manager Jim Leyland said. "I don't know if that's the right word. We know what's at stake here, so obviously you don't like to lose games.
