Pontiac Teachers Scheduled To Vote On Wage And Benefit Cuts
PONTIAC (WWJ) - Teachers in the Pontiac School district are scheduled to vote on wage and benefits cuts after the teachers union has reached a tentative contract deal.
Pontiac Education Association President Aimee McKeever says the state has been withholding a $1.3 million April payment because of the district's red ink.
"We are not responsible for this deficit and yet it's coming on our shoulders to take care of the district and get them through - but our first and foremost priority as teachers ... is to educate the students in this community," McKeever.
"All I can tell you is it's going to be rather uncomfortable, for the next year, and I'm hoping my members will understand that this is for one year," she said.
Details of the contract have not been released. She says that could mean payless paydays, or even a state takeover.
McKeever says she's not sure if the teachers will approve the deal.
