Poll: Obama Leads Romney, Gingrich In Michigan
LANSING (WWJ/AP) - A new poll gives President Obama the lead over all Republican challengers in Michigan, including the state's favorite son.
The EPIC/MRA survey of 600 likely voters finds Mr. Obama leading Mitt Romney in a head-to-head matchup, 48 percent to 40 percent. Romney grew up in Oakland County, the son of the late former Michigan governor George Romney.
When pitted against Newt Gingrich, the president's lead widens. It's 51 percent for Obama, 38 percent for the former U.S. House Speaker.
The poll results come three days after Mr. Obama's State of the Union address. The president speaks at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor Friday morning.
Michigan's presidential primary is Feb. 28. Romney has been considered the favorite, due mainly to his Michigan roots.
The poll was commissioned by the Detroit Free Press and WXYZ-TV, Channel 7.
