DETROIT (CBS Detroit) There may not be a Santa Claus, Virginia -- but there is a Detroit.
And it's a very scary place.
That's according to an ad running against Virginia's Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe that throws a quick succession of anti-liberal cliches against the former Clinton advisor while images of the Clintons and Obamas, cable TV hosts Chris Matthews and Rachel Maddow flash on the screen.
Describing a power grab lead by a gang of five, the ad says the "elite media," "smear groups financed by foreigners," "extremist liberal leadership," "Wall Street," and "Hollywood partisans" are bringing "Chicago style politics to Virginia."
"This is Virginia and we won't let you Detroit us," the ad says.
McAuliffe is running against Republican incumbent Bob McDonnell. The ad says it was sponsored by www.fightforvirginia.com, which is funded by a group called Fight for Tomorrow, a national super PAC based in Texas.
Matt Mackowiak published an article about the ads on conservative publisher Andrew Breitbart's blog, writing, "The attack ads are meant to cover McAuliffe's 'hidden agenda' of high taxes, government regulation, health care rationing, high gas prices, collapsing public pensions, pay offs to union bosses, and Hollywood values in our schools." He added the group spent six figures on the ad buy.
