Police: WSU Sexual Assault Claim False
DETROIT (WWJ) - It turns out the woman who reported a sexual assault at Wayne State University this week was lying.
On Wednesday, the school issued a campus notice about a female student being sexually assaulted in WSU Lot 50 – a large gravel parking lot just south of the school's athletic building.
The 30-year-old woman told police she was hit from behind around 8:45 p.m. Monday by an unknown male, who sexually assaulted her as she struggled with him. Police say the woman couldn't give them any specific details about her attacker and had inconsistencies in her story.
After questioning the woman for a second time and reviewing surveillance video, police discovered that her story wasn't true. The woman later admitted that she made it all up.
The woman, whose name has not been released, is now facing a charge of filing a false police report.
WSU Police say while they take every report seriously, false reports take officers away from legitimate calls and hurt the school's reputation for being one of the safest campuses in Michigan.
Police urge students, staff and faculty to use the WSUPD SafeWalk program if they ever feel apprehensive about walking anywhere in the campus area. All you have to do is call campus police at 313-577-2222 and request a SafeWalk. Then, an officer will be dispatched to your location and watch you walk to your destination.
