Police: Woman Lied About Abduction Because She Was Late For Work
SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - Police say a woman concocted a story about being abducted and forced to withdraw money from an ATM because she was running late for work after lunch.
Southfield police say they responded to the area of 12 Mile and Telegraph roads around 12:50 p.m. last Thursday because a woman wanted to file a police report.
The woman told police she was sitting in her vehicle when a man suddenly got into the passenger side of her vehicle and told her to take him to an ATM to withdraw cash. Police say the woman then claimed that she drove the man to a gas station and withdrew cash from her account before dropping him off somewhere in Detroit.
Officers say they were suspicious of the victim's story, so they went to the gas station and reviewed the video from business.
"After reviewing the video it was obvious to officers that [the woman] wasn't being forced to withdraw money from her ATM and thus was filling a false police report for some reason," investigators said in a statement.
Police then went back and arrested the woman for filing a false report, a felony. Once back at the Southfield jail, officers located a sandwich baggie containing marijuana along with some narcotics paraphernalia, and added a charge of marijuana possession.
Detectives then interviewed the woman, who eventually revealed that she wasn't being truthful about what really happened. Police say the woman admitted that she wasn't abducted or forced to withdraw money from the ATM.
Instead, the woman said she was late returning back to work from lunch and made the whole story up as an excuse for being late. After a work associate insisted on calling the police and reporting the incident, the woman said she had no choice but to continue with her original story.
The woman's identity was not released.
