Police Warn About Latest Facebook Scam
STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) - Local authorities have issued a new warning about Facebook scams.
Sterling Heights Police say a woman transferred $1,200 through Western Union to someone she believed needed help. Officials the woman was contacted by the friend through the popular social networking website Facebook, stating she needed the money because she had been robbed while in London.
Lt. Luke Riley tells WWJ that, as it turns out, her "friend" was not even out of the country.
"Anytime somebody like that requests a large sum of money be sent, especially out of the country, the best thing to do is just to hold off and try to verify it. Contact another family member or someone else who could verify that what they're telling you is legitimate," Riley said.
Riley said, in this case, the money could not be returned.
"Especially when it goes out of the country. Once it's gone, it gets picked up very quickly from the office where it's been sent to, and that's the end of it," he said.
