Police: 3 Face Multiple Charges After Carjacking Elderly Detroit Siblings
DETROIT (WWJ) - Two 18-year-old men and a 21-year-old woman have been charged in the carjacking and armed robbery of elderly siblings in Detroit.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said 18-year-olds Amiri Naylor and Derrius Simmons, and 21-year-old Charelle Smith were arraigned Thursday in connection with a carjacking and armed robbery of an 80-year-old female and her 79-year-old brother.
Naylor is charged with carjacking, receiving and concealing a stolen vehicle and fleeing police. Simmons is charged with carjacking, receiving and concealing a stolen vehicle and armed robbery. Smith is charged with receiving and concealing stolen property, theft, and intent to commit identification theft.
Bond was set at $200,000 for each of the defendants, who are due back in court on Nov. 1 for a preliminary exam.
That crime occurred this past Monday in the female victim's driveway at a home on St. Patrick Street on Detroit's northeast side. Police say the two male suspects approached the female victim, and one suspect pointed a weapon at her, demanding the vehicle. The suspects escaped in the vehicle with the male victim, who was still seated inside the car.
The suspects went to the area of Whithorn and Drifton and picked up two females, while the male victim remained seated inside the car. After driving a short distance, supposedly, the suspect stopped the vehicle in a neighborhood and the male victim was pushed out of the car.
Detroit Police Officers from the Eastern District Patrol and Special Operations responded to the female victim's home and received a description of the suspects, and the vehicle that was taken. As officers searched the area, they observed the vehicle in the area of Gunston and 6 Mile Road.
The officers attempted a traffic stop, but supposedly the male suspect refused to stop the vehicle, which initiated a vehicle pursuit. The suspect eventually stopped the vehicle in the 11800 block of Flanders, and the suspects fled from the car.
The suspects were immediately taken into custody without any incidents. Officers found the male victim, unharmed, in the area of E. McNichols and Gunston.
Police belive the trio is also responsible for a robbery that occurred on Oct. 18 at a local store at Gratiot and Loretta. In this incident, police say a 23-year-old female and her 29-year-old boyfriend exited the store and were walking to their vehicle, when Naylor, Simmons, and Smith allegedly approached them and took their personal items. The male victim was also assaulted.
Police say they found the victims' stolen property while conduction a search on Smith.
"Due to good police work and citizens cooperation these two criminal cases were closed," Interim Police Chief Chester Logan said in a release. "Our officers are dedicated to the citizens of Detroit, and we know it's going to take a team effort to win this battle against crime."
