Police: Ticket Led To Suspected Car Theft Ring
NILES (AP) - West Michigan police say a 48-year-old man previously charged with fleeing officers remains a fugitive and is suspected in a multimillion-dollar interstate car theft ring.
Berrien Springs Oronoko Township Police say in a release that Paul Abbott of Evanston, Ill., was charged in July with possessing a stolen vehicle after he fled in a 2012 Chrysler 300 in Niles. Abbott was stopped by police for speeding, but was unable to produce necessary paperwork.
Abbott fled when a drug dog arrived to inspect the vehicle, reaching speeds of more than 100 mph before stopping. Police believe Abbott disposed of drugs during the pursuit, but none were discovered.
A hidden Vehicle Identification Number indicated the car belonged to Napelton Chrysler in Illinois, which reported the vehicle stolen in May.
