Police Suspect Husband In Fatal Stabbing

Police say victim's husband is the prime suspect in the case of a West Bloomfield woman found dead in her home.

Oakland County records show the victim, Lisa Bennett, had filed for divorce last week, just days before she was found dead in her bed in her West Bloomfield home.

"[The husband] is in custody now, and will remain in custody...He's made a statement that implicates him. At this point, I'm kind of hesitant to call it a confession. But, he had made statements that basically indicate that he's responsible for the death," said West Bloomfield Police Sgt. Bob Spencer.

Spenser said police expect to present a formal arrest warrant request to the Prosecutor's Office Friday morning.

Police say they received a call from Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital Wednesday where they say a man, identified as Ellery Bennett, showed up with multiple stab wounds.  He reportedly told doctors that there was another stabbing victim at a home near Haggerty and Pontiac Trail roads.

"My information is that he drove himself to Beaumont with stab wounds. He mentioned to staff at Beaumont that we would find a victim at this address at South Oak court," said West Bloomfield Police Lieutenant Carl Fuhs.

"That's what started the ball rolling, and that's what lead us to this home." he said.

At that home, police found the body of 46-year old wife, Lisa Bennett.

Investigators think it may have been a case of domestic violence.

The husband, who remained at Beaumont for treatment, was reported in good condition.   The couple's two children and a grandmother lived at the home and, according to police, didn't hear anything.

The victim's attorney, Daniel Moss, said he was shocked to hear about the incident -- describing his client  as a "wonderful, successful" woman who was "vibrant and bright."

Moss said the husband was involved with some struggling businesses.  Court records show Paramount Bank filed a complaint against the husband in late June, however information about the complaint wasn't available.
