Police Search For Missing 70-Year-Old Who May Be In Danger

ROCHESTER (WWJ) - Authorities in Oakland County are searching for a missing 70-year-old man who is believed to be in danger.

George Vanderweit was last seen around 9:20 a.m. on July 5 in the area of Runyon and Dequindre roads in Rochester.

Investigators say Vanderweit was recently discharged from a mental health facility and is considered to be a danger to himself.

Police, along with Oakland County Sheriff's Technical Rescue Squad Deputies, spent a majority of the morning and afternoon Saturday combing the area for clues that might lead them to Vanderweit, but their search hasn't been an easy one.

Rochester Police Chief Steve Schettenhelm said along with battling 80 degree temperatures, searchers have had to trample through marshes and heavily wooded areas.

Vanderweit is described as a white male, 5'9" and 178 lbs. He was last seen wearing a red shirt with "Bargains" written on it, and olive-green shorts. Police say he may be riding an older model green bicycle.

Family members say Vanderweit wasn't carrying his wallet, any identification or his cell phone.

Anyone with information on Vanderweit's whereabouts is asked to contact the Rochester Police Department at 248-651-9621.
