Police Search For Burglar Near Elementary School
HARPER WOODS (WWJ) - Police in Harper Woods are looking for a burglar who might have been shot during a home invasion near an elementary school.
The incident unfolded early Friday morning in the neighborhood of Harper Avenue and I-94, near Poupard Elementary School.
Police Chief Jim Burke said a resident came home from work around 5:30 a.m. and found someone inside his house on VanAntwerp Street.
"He went down in the basement and there was an intruder in his house. The homeowner was confronted by the suspect and the homeowner pulled out a handgun," Burke told WWJ's Mike Campbell.
The homeowner told police he shot at the suspect and thinks he him hit, but the suspect took off running. Burke said officers and K-9 units combed the area, but found no signs of the suspect.
"We had officers that were close by and within a minute, we were on that scene and began a search," he said. "So far, we have not located the suspect. He's a black male wearing a green hoodie, that's all we have so far."
Officers walked through the school with administrators prior to the beginning of the school day and didn't find anything out of the norm, so the school will remain open as usual Friday.
"We made contact with school officials and they decided to open school as normal. Right now, we don't believe there is any danger to anybody. Students are the number one concern of ours and we're going to maintain a heavy presence there this morning and keep looking for this guy," Burke said.
Anyone with information on the incident or the suspect is urged to call 911 or Harper Woods police at 313-343-2530.
